In December 2010 a plea for assistance went out to interested parties or individuals to assist SARDA with roof covering for their newly erected steel structure in Assagay, based in Durban South Africa. SARDA is a registered fund raising organization with teaching branches in major city centres throughout South Africa. It is an Associated Member of the Riding for the Disabled Association. Their vision is to improve the quality of life for children with special needs through the physical, cognitive, social and emotional benefits offered through therapeutic horse riding.
Tracey Cummings, Project Director and Senior Instructor of SARDA explains: “In riding a horse, freedom and independence becomes a reality; and that really is the key to unlocking any potential physical and mental rehabilitation. We have groups from various Special Needs Schools using our facilities, ALL lessons are free of charge and the Instructors are volunteers.
Safal Steel met with Tracey Cummings and felt that the project met all criteria from a Corporate Social Responsibility perspective. In response Safal Steel donated 10 tons of pre-painted aluminium/zinc coils in Colorplus Rain Cloud. Safal Steel coordinated with sister company Safintra Roofing to arrange for the roll forming and installation of the roof sheets, free of charge. Installation was done by MJ Cheater.
Tracey Cummings further explains: “The upgrade of our facility started in 2007 and the goals that we set are starting to come to fruition. Initially we saw the covered arena as a benefit to the children as it meant that they could continue with lessons even in inclement weather. However once the project was complete during the middle of March 2011, which also happens to the hottest time of the year in Durban, we decided to have the first lesson in the newly completed facility. We could however not believe the level of comfort under the steel structure despite the sweltering day. We have now opted to use the arena for every lesson regardless of the weather simply because of the level of comfort it provides for both the children and the Instructors.
