Safal Steel – The future of coated steel

Safal Steel is pleased to have hosted the Mayor of EThekwini, Mr James Nxumalo yesterday at their coating complex in Cato Ridge.
The project commenced in 2008 and is now in full commercial production of aluminium-zinc coated steel, being the ONLY aluminium-zinc coating mill in South Africa, Safal Steel is now offering consumers a local alternative to galvanised steel, available either unpainted and branded ZincAL® or pre-painted branded COLORPLUS®.
During project phase Safal Steel was a major contributor to employment in Cato Ridge with over 600 staff members assisting with the completion of the project and alleviating the 60% unemployment rate which exits in the Cato Ridge basin. The Mayor Mr James Nxumalo highlighted the opportunity which the local community has for up-skilling and the ability to earn a stable income.
Currently Safal Steel employs 340 staff members from local communities and surrounds, in various semi-skilled, skilled and admin positions. The Mill can produce 150 000 tons per annum, giving rise to a further indirect employment of services in the freight, road, and contracting industries.
Safal Steel has a strong focus on community, investing in various corporate social activities.
Since 2010 Safal has distributed lap desks to schools in the local areas; they have replaced the roof at Mpophomeni Municipal Offices in Pietermaritzburg and assisted SARDA (South African Riding for the Disabled Association) with material for their arena roof. Safal also invests in their staff with a strong focus on AIDS awareness also offering free AIDS testing, Safal partners with SANBS to sets up on site giving the staff an opportunity to donate blood every 3 months.
Safal Steel would like to thank the Mayor, Mr James Nxumalo for taking the time to visit our R1bn facility.
